20 Must-See Places in AmsterdamCentrum-West · Neighbourhood · Side streets

Once a working-class district, Jordaan is now known for independent shops and intimate streets. It is a living neighbourhood, not a gated attraction. Step away from the main canal to find quieter corners and pause at a café.

Suggested: 1–2 hours
What to do here
- Explore around Noordermarkt and check market days separately. Do not enter private courtyards without permission.
Getting there
- Walk from Centraal or Dam, returning along Prinsengracht if you like.
What to see on a Jordaan walk
- Suggested walk: start around Westerkerk, follow Prinsengracht, visit Noordermarkt and loop back through the side streets. Allow one to two hours for canal views, small shops and a café stop; a museum visit needs extra time.
- Seeing Noordermarkt square and visiting its market are different experiences. Check current market days and hours before planning around stalls; you do not need to buy a tour to walk around the neighbourhood.
Getting there and planning your budget
- If staying centrally, connect the walk to your canal route. From farther away, use your chosen starting point in the GVB journey planner rather than the whole neighbourhood name to avoid backtracking.
- Walking the streets is free; food, drinks and museum entry are separate costs. If you also want to enter the Anne Frank House, plan it as a separate ticketed visit and check booking on its official website.
