Amsterdam in 4 Days: A Mapped Itinerary
Explore Amsterdam’s canals, museums and north bank over three days, then spend day four in Edam and Volendam. This 12-stop plan leaves room for meals and travel. If you have only three days, leave out the countryside day.
Explore the route stops ↓Canals and Jordaan
Walk from Dam through the canal belt to the Anne Frank House and Jordaan. If no timed ticket is available for the Anne Frank House, pass the exterior and continue your canal walk. Do not rely on buying a ticket at the door.
Museum, park and De Pijp
Spend time in one major museum, then slow down in Vondelpark and De Pijp. If Van Gogh Museum is your priority, replace the Rijksmuseum and edit the stop in your planner. Avoid squeezing both major museums into one day.
Old town and Amsterdam Noord
Walk from the Oude Kerk area to the IJ waterfront, then cross by ferry to the north bank. In poor weather, spend longer at an Eye exhibition instead of the A’DAM viewpoint. Check ferry services and the exhibition calendar before setting out.
Edam and Volendam
Combine canal-side streets in Edam with Volendam harbour and a waterfront walk. This countryside day is optional: for a three-day stay, use the first three days. In strong wind or rain, swap it for another museum day in the city.
For a three-day visit
If you have only three full days, leave out the countryside day and follow the first three days in Amsterdam. Avoid booking a major museum on a short arrival or departure day. Choose according to your interests rather than squeezing four days into three.
Transport and return time
Combine walking, trams and ferries in the city. Day four uses regional buses; do not assume a city-only GVB ticket covers these trips. Check ticket coverage and return services. All travel times are estimates that vary with waiting and walking.
Tickets and weather
Book timed tickets for the Anne Frank House and your chosen major museum first, then reorder your days around them. Keep the countryside day flexible for the weather. Hours and fees may change; check official links before travelling.
