Istanbul in 5 Days: A Mapped Itinerary
Explore Istanbul by area over five full days, from the Historic Peninsula to Beyoğlu, the Bosphorus and the Asian side. This 13-stop route leaves room for meals and travel. With an extra day, choose one of four island outings; islands are not added automatically to the main plan.
Explore the route stops ↓Sultanahmet icons
Begin in the historic centre with short walks between Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern. Arrange mosque visits around prayer times; take lunch earlier if queues are long. Check the separate tourist visiting conditions at Hagia Sophia.
Topkapi, Gülhane and Eminönü
Devote the morning to the palace, pause in the park, then walk to Eminönü and the Spice Bazaar. Choose your Topkapi day using the official opening calendar. Shorten the bazaar visit if you stay longer at the palace; do not force the Grand Bazaar into this day.
Karaköy, Galata and Beyoğlu
After breakfast in Karaköy, climb towards Galata and explore the passages off Istiklal. The climb to Galata is steep. Consider public transport such as Tünel, or choose the exterior and neighbourhood walk instead of a tower ticket.
Dolmabahçe and the Bosphorus
Combine a palace visit with the Ortaköy waterfront via Beşiktaş, leaving time for Bosphorus views. For a Bosphorus cruise, shorten or replace Ortaköy according to the current departure pier and time. A cruise is not an automatic continuation of the walk.
Kadıköy, Moda and Üsküdar
Explore markets and waterfronts on the Asian side. Finish in Üsküdar, continuing to Kuzguncuk if you have energy. Check road transport or rail via Ayrılık Çeşmesi between Kadıköy and Üsküdar; do not assume a direct ferry. Leave out Kuzguncuk for a gentler day.
One more day: the Princes’ Islands
The Princes’ Islands comprise nine islands. For a day trip, choose Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada or Kınalıada. This extra day is not included in the five-day plan. Avoid trying to visit them all in one day; allow for ferries and return waits.
Büyükada · Mansions and island streets
Walk from the pier to Clock Square, then explore mansion-lined streets. Adding Aya Yorgi requires a longer, steep walk; it is not part of this short route.
Heybeliada · Green streets and waterfront
Walk through the centre towards Değirmenburnu. Check current recreation-area entry conditions and choose extra hilltop stops according to your walking ability.
Burgazada · Literature and sea views
Walk from the pier towards Sait Faik’s house, checking the museum opening day. Add a waterfront meal for a shorter island day. Leave time to walk back and wait for your ferry.
Kınalıada · A compact island visit
Take a short walk around the pier, centre and waterfront. If adding swimming, check weather, beach access and fees separately. Keep your swim short enough to reach the return ferry comfortably.
Tickets, transport and flexibility
Reorder days around palace closures and mosque prayer times. Admission and transport fees may change; check official links before travelling. Map pins show visiting order, not navigation. Times are estimates and vary with traffic, queues and walking pace.
