Rome in 3 Days: A Mapped Itinerary

Follow ancient Rome on day one, make time for Vatican City on day two, then walk from the squares to Trastevere on day three. This 11-stop first-visit plan groups nearby places while leaving room for breaks. Choose a day on the map and adapt the route to your bookings in your own planner.

Explore the route stops ↓

Ancient Rome and the Capitoline

Spend most of the day in one historic area, from the Colosseum to the Forum. Swap the Colosseum and Forum order to suit your ticket time. After a long archaeological visit, finish at the square rather than adding the Capitoline museums. Shorten exposed walks in heat and take water breaks.

Vatican City and the Tiber

Pair a museum morning with a flexible basilica visit and river views. The Vatican Museums close on most Sundays; check the official calendar for the last Sunday and holidays. Swap this day with the squares day when needed. If tired after the museums, move the basilica to another day; a castle interior visit is not required.

From the squares to Trastevere

Walk from the Spanish Steps, Trevi and the Pantheon towards a neighbourhood evening. Adjust the order to your Pantheon admission time. In rain or if tired, save Trastevere for another evening. This mostly outdoor day is the flexible part of the trip when museum closures require rearranging.

Getting around Rome

Start each day near its first stop and plan the connection from your accommodation separately. Walking times are approximate planning allowances, not live navigation. Uneven archaeological paths and slopes slow the pace; check official entrance and accessibility information if needed.

Which tickets should you arrange first?

Check dates and timed entry options for the Colosseum and Vatican Museums first, then fit in the Pantheon. Compare Forum and Palatine coverage with your Colosseum ticket. This route does not assume a second museum day or separate ticket for the Sistine Chapel.

Meals and budget

Leave a proper lunch break after the Forum on day one and after the museums on day two. Slow down in Trastevere on the third evening. Separate tickets, transport and meals in your budget, comparing current official menus and admission options. You do not need to buy every optional interior visit.

Are three days enough, and can you swap days?

This plan needs three full days apart from arrival and departure, and does not try to cover all of Rome. Swap days when tickets or closures require it. Importing the route does not book admission or automatically validate closures; check museum calendars for your dates and edit the draft accordingly.

Day 1: Ancient Rome and the Capitoline

Spend most of the day in one historic area, from the Colosseum to the Forum.

Around 6–8 hours · including lunch

Colosseum

1.5–2 hours

Start with your timed Colosseum ticket. Check whether your option includes the arena or underground, and allow extra time for security. If skipping admission, keep the exterior stop short and adjust the Forum visit accordingly.

Roman Forum and Palatine

2–3 hours

Treat the Forum and Palatine as one extended visit. Compare coverage with your Colosseum booking before buying a second ticket. Wear comfortable shoes for sloping and uneven paths, then leave time for lunch after exiting.

Piazza del Campidoglio

30–45 min · square

Climb to the Capitoline square after the archaeological area. This route includes a square-side break; the Capitoline Museums require a separate ticket and several additional hours. Choose them instead of another stop if you have the energy.

Day 2: Vatican City and the Tiber

Pair a museum morning with a flexible basilica visit and river views.

Around 7–9 hours · depending on security and breaks

Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel

3–4 hours

Arrive at the Viale Vaticano entrance for your booking; St Peter’s Square is not the museum entrance. The Sistine Chapel forms part of the museum visit. Check the official closure calendar and leave flexible time for lunch afterwards.

St Peter’s Square and Basilica

1–2 hours · excluding security queues

Do not assume a direct internal passage from the museums: walk outside to the square’s security entrance. Basic basilica admission is free; the dome and extra services are separate. If worship or security queues delay access, keep this to the square and lighten the day.

Castel Sant’Angelo and its bridge

45–60 min · exterior

Walk via Via della Conciliazione to the river. Finish with the castle exterior and bridge views; an interior visit is not included in today’s timing. If you prefer the ticketed castle, replace the basilica and check its opening calendar.
