Venice: visitor guide
Europe’s 20 Most Romantic Cities and TownsItaly · Canals · palaces · islands

Venice is most compelling when a quiet canal appears only a few streets from its major squares. San Marco matters, but the fuller experience comes from combining vaporetto rides and walks through Cannaregio, Dorsoduro and Castello.

Take a gondola only if it matters to you; vaporetto line 1 at sunset offers a longer Grand Canal experience.
Why is it romantic?
- Water, narrow passages and reflected light on stone façades turn the city into a constantly changing stage.
Do not miss
- See Piazza San Marco early, then walk from Rialto to the Zattere waterfront in Dorsoduro.
- Add Burano’s colour or quieter Torcello as a half-day island route.
What to do together
- Ride a vaporetto along the Grand Canal at sunset.
- Wander Cannaregio and stop for cicchetti in small bacari wine bars.
What to eat
- Try baccalà mantecato, sarde in saor, seafood risotto and cicchetti.
- Choose tiramisu or frittelle for dessert and a local ombra of wine.
