Kuşadası

Bar Street

Kuşadası, a district of Aydın, is a port of call for yachts and international cruise ships. Güvercinada, just off the shore, is its symbol, while the nearby national park has a rich variety of trees. My relationship with the resort has always been complicated: even as a child, I struggled with its crowds and sense of disorder. During the visit described here, I was disappointed by what I felt was unplanned development and poor upkeep. I noticed litter and unpleasant smells in some streets and waterfront areas, and felt the visitor experience deserved more attention. To me it seemed caught between a holiday resort and a growing town. These are personal impressions from an old visit, not a report on present-day conditions or services.

At the time of writing, I thought the marina development had opened the previous year, with shops and places to eat arranged like a shopping complex. I do not want simply to criticise: what upset me was seeing a place with so much potential not making the most of it. Why not take better care of these beautiful destinations? The parts I still enjoyed were the seafront—because I love the sea—and some of the smaller holiday settlements nearby.
